NOTE FROM the Author:
"As an author, naturally it was initially my idea to write an entertaining novel, but as I got into the interviews and photos relating to the mid 1940s I found myself wanting to capture a time and place that has disappeared. To record a time when a young boys entertainment consisted of simple pleasures, listening to the radio, going to a picture show on Saturday, and letting his imagination be his entertainment. If youre from a small town and as old as I am, Ill bet you can remember bringing a note to school in the spring that said something like this, Dear Mr. Jones: I have given Richard permission to go to school barefooted. And if youre a boy, those summers were shorts only, no shoes or shirt and a sling shot was tucked in every kids back pocket."
